Nestled in the lush mountains of Pingxi District, Shifen (十分) is one of Taiwan’s most enchanting little towns — a place where old railways meet floating lanterns, waterfalls, and nostalgia. Once a coal mining village, Shifen has transformed into a beloved stop for travelers seeking charm, serenity, and a dash of magic.
The highlight of any visit to Shifen is the sky lantern experience. Along the famous Shifen Old Street, locals and tourists alike gather to paint their wishes and dreams onto colorful paper lanterns before releasing them into the sky.
Each color represents a different kind of wish —
❤️ red for happiness
💛 yellow for wealth
💚 green for health
💙 blue for success.
It’s a symbolic act of letting go, hoping the winds will carry your wishes heavenward. Lanterns usually cost NT$150–200 each (for single color) or NT$250–300 (for multicolored designs). Vendors will gladly help you take photos or even record videos while your lantern drifts away — a small gesture that makes the moment extra memorable.
Crossing the Shifen Hanging Bridge
Before heading to the waterfall, don’t miss the Shifen Hanging Bridge (十分大橋) — one of the most scenic spots in the area.
Suspended above the Keelung River, the bridge connects the old town to the walking path leading to the Shifen Waterfall Park. As you cross, you’ll be greeted with sweeping views of the lush green valley, the gentle flow of the river below, and the rhythmic sound of the trains in the distance.
The bridge slightly sways with each step, adding a fun thrill — especially for kids and first-time visitors. It’s also a great photo stop, especially around sunset when the sky takes on golden hues.
A short 20-minute walk (or a quick scooter ride) from the old street leads to the breathtaking Shifen Waterfall, the widest waterfall in Taiwan. At 40 meters wide, its cascading waters create a misty rainbow on sunny days, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers.
The suspension bridges and lush forest paths leading to the falls add to the scenic charm — it’s worth taking your time to enjoy the view.
Between the photo ops and scenic strolls, fuel up with some local bites:
Peanut ice cream rolls (花生捲冰淇淋)
Grilled Taiwanese sausages
Crispy fried mushrooms
Classic milk tea from a railway café
Simple, flavorful, and perfect for a travel break.
